I spotted this sign on a truck outside our Chicago Roasting Works shortly after I started at Intelligentsia in 2016.  At the time, I felt it was an accurate way to describe farmworkers and farm labor issues in specialty coffee: they were situated in our collective blind spot.  Thankfully, that is beginning to change.  While it is too early to say that the tens of millions of men, women and children who harvest coffee are fully appreciated and their thankless work is being appropriately valued, there are some encouraging signs that they have moved out of our blind spot and are not likely to return to the shadows.
